Experiments with Expiry Dates: Year-old eggnog

In summer 2009, I drank (or tried to drink) a carton of eggnog that I had stored in my fridge for six months past Christmas. Somehow, I wanted to outdo myself, so last after Christmas 2009, I bought some discount eggnog on sale, and stored it for a whole year.

On Jan. 4, 2011, I drank that eggnog. With tequila.

This is how it turned out.

(For what it’s worth, I’m cooking up a few more experiments with expiry dates — but they kind of take a lot of prep time.)

As entertaining as that was, it doesn’t compare to the first time when we watched you gag on noxious chunky eggnog.

I can watch that again, and again, and again. :P

    Like the holiday ritual though.

That was less terrifying than I’d feared it would be.

As cringe-inducing as it was to watch you chug chunky eggnog, I actually find this video more disturbing. Even with the bacteria-destroying benefit of tequila, the fact you can drink unrefrigerated eggnog a year after you bought it (and 8 months after the expiration date) makes me wonder what’s in there preserving this “dairy” product.

It’s like when Morgan Spurlock let those McDonald’s french fries slowly decompose in his office, and they maintained their consistency for months.

If you really wanted to make your viewers squeamish, you’d read the ingredients on the label!

Thank you for the giggle. I am not going to try this experiment since I am still a bit hungover from my husband’s home made New Year’s Eve egg nog. His recipe calls for a whole bottle of bourbon. Mmmmmmm. Good times.

Yikes ! I’ll toss out meat, milk, eggs even if they’re near the expiry date, much less past it !

@ Curtis — According to President’s Choice online, their Rich & Creamy Egg Nog contains just these ingredients: “Milk ingredients, sugar, frozen egg yolk, guar gum, carrageenan, spice, rum, natural flavour, colour.” Yes rum. Although, less rum than spice. And, they warn it could change. I can dig through my recycling and check the actual bottle if you like.

@ Jen — mmm, bourbon. There’s a whole subset of people who fight over the proper liquor to add to eggnog. Me, I like to mix it up. But tequila is surprisingly good.

@ Christian — Use your judgment on milk and meat, but they’re probably good for a week or so past the expiry date, especially if they’re unopened. The good thing about eggs is that you never open them until you eat them — eggs, if they’re pasteurized (they are) and refrigerated, are basically good forever. Plus, if they’re bad, you know instantly. (Hint: if cracking eggs well past the expiry date, crack them individually into a bowl before adding them to your recipe/frying pan, then a rotten egg at the end won’t wreck your whole recipe.)
