Who hasn’t ever read an Archie comic? Despite being some of the most innocuous entertainment in creation, Archie comics (for whatever reason) hold an enduring place in popular culture. I mean, the character of Archie Andrews is almost 70 years old — having been introduced in 1941 in Pep Comics #22.
A great many of Archie’s (mis)adventures revolve around the love triangle with Betty and Veronica. Which of these two beauties he should eventually end up with is a topic Archie fans constantly debate (I vote for Betty). After 65 years of indecision, it appears as though the question of who Archie eventually ends up with will soon be answered.
In August, Archie #600, entitled “The Proposal” hits newsstands. My money is on Betty. Feel free to place your bets here.

Amy — That’s exactly what I thought. She can’t be that much of a bitch, can she? Plus it’s redhead and redhead — like calls to like. (Except in electromagnetism.)

Oh, and I’d just like to point out I haven’t read an Archie comic in at least 10 years.

I would like to point out I don’t know who Cheryl is…

What the heck is a high school kid doing getting married, anyway?
Isn’t that just a little…I dunno, Sarah Palin-ish for Archie Comix?

Wouldn’t the fiancée have to be pregnant in that case?

My money’s on the “it doesn’t really happen”. There will be hijinks — perhaps Archie will intent to ask Veronica, find out that Reggie’s beaten him to it, and settle for Betty, who will welcome him with open arms, and end up happy nonetheless, but I can’t see them eliminating the basic dynamic of the comic.
Maybe a dream sequence? Where Archie finds out what life is like with both Betty and Veronica?

UPDATE: The Globe and Mail says that Archie chooses Veronica:

The article also notes that in a 94-95 series, Archie did indeed choose his “old flame” Cheryl.

I don’t see this ending well for Arch.
Veronica will grow tired, and then resentful, of Archie’s déclassé reality. Her father is already suspicious that he’s only after her inheritance. She’ll start out with sniping, emasculating comments and then eventually move on to an affair, culminating in a divorce where the hapless ginger gets taken to the cleaners…left on the curbside like so much recycling.
Betty will move on, finding happiness and an eventual husband through aid development work in Ghana. Reggie will get his own reality show, and get caught with a transvestite hooker. He’ll play out his days telling war stories and selling cars in Arizona.
The saddest story will be Moose and Midge. I see his jealousy escalating until he erupts into a murder/suicide, shocking Riverdale.

What happens to Dilton?

Billionaire. The lowly nerds always end up on top in these stories….
Jughead is the wildcard here.

Jughead’s easy. He becomes the next Gordon Ramsey.

Jughead is diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
But why doesn’t he get fat from all that compulsive eating? Binging and purging? Heroin addiction? There’s something going on there.

OK, last comment on the subject lest anyone think I’m, like, weird or anything. Hah! As if that would happen!
