How near and far the future

I was thinking this morning, since it’s New Year’s Day, about all the parents around the world who are lucking out with free diapers because they happened to conceive nine months ago, so they’ll deliver the New Year’s baby, and that’s somehow a big deal.

And then I realized that anyone born today has a pretty good shot of seeing the year 2100. It’s only 89 years away. And, while it’s still an accomplishment to make it to nonagenarian status, it’s not like it’s never been done before. And anyone who’s currently finishing up their ninth decade would have been born in 1921 — what was the expectation that you might make it 90 or so that year, I wonder?

Anyway, Happy New Year! I hope we all make it to 90 and then watch it recede quickly in our rearview mirrors.
