Short Film Friday: Infinite Santa 8000 (Episode 1)

As (loosely) promised, a bonus Christmas-themed Short Film Friday post!

I thought about posting any one of a billion schmaltzy, feel-good, crappy, cookie-cutter Christmas short films. Seriously. Go to YouTube and search. They’re everywhere, if that’s the kind of thing that blows up your holiday-themed skirt. But that’s not how I roll…

Instead, I offer to you the first episode of Infinite Santa 8000 — a sci-fi horror animated series starring Santa Claus. If mutants and murder and cybernetic implants and cannibalism don’t scream “Christmas,” I don’t know what does.

If you dig it, check out the Infinite Santa website, where you can see the rest of the episodes (currently at 11 and counting…)

Short Film Friday: How to Cope with Death

In what appears to be an ongoing theme, here’s another Short Film Friday entry involving an old woman and death.

Maybe I should find something with a holiday flavour. Who knows? Maybe you’ll get two Short Film Friday posts today!

Short Film Friday: The Lady and the Reaper

Short Film Friday: 7×13=28

Ok, this is a cheat. It isn’t really a short film, but part of a longer work.

On the other hand, I’m tired and this makes all sorts of sense to me. Plus, it stands on its own and it is hilarious.

There’s something to be said for humor that is smart and funny and doesn’t instantly go for the easy fart joke. (Not that I don’t like the occasional fart joke…)

Short Film Friday: Time Piece

Have you ever watched a movie that made you feel as if you were high? Or that you weren’t quite sure what was going on? You look around at the other people watching the film, all of them engrossed in what is happening on screen, and you start to wonder if maybe, just maybe, your brain is shutting down. Then, one of your viewing partners says “What the hell?” and you feel relief.

Yeah. That’s this film. Made in 1965, it was nominated for an Oscar. For some reason. I dunno.

And, yeah, the guy with the beard who you thought kind of looked like a young Jim Henson? That’s Jim Henson. He wrote and directed and starred in this beauty.

Short Film Friday: Le Royaume

‘Tis the triumphant return of your regularly scheduled Short Film Fridays. Barring any unforeseen catastrophes, we should be back to a weekly schedule now. Unless I forget, which is quite likely.

But not today! I have a film for today. It’s animated and it’s French. Don’t let the French part scare you, because the little dialogue there is consists mostly of grunts and vague vocalizations anyways.

What’s the theme or the moral? I haven’t decided. Perhaps it deals with environmentalism vs industrialization. Maybe it is about the quest for power and it’s inevitable consequences.

Or maybe it’s about a badass beaver with an axe.

You decide…

Short Film Friday: Fallen

It’s been a while since a Short Film Friday installment has been posted. Sorry about that. Give me a couple of weeks and, one way or another, I should have a little more time on my hands.

In any case, I do have a short film for today: Fallen.

It’s short, sweet and heart-breakingly sad. I love it. I’m sure you will, as well.

Life, in the flash of a falling star

What goes through a meteorite’s mind, as it falls to earth? Is it joy? Fear? A little of both?

Only the mind of Sascha Geddert can tell you.

Short Film Friday: CL!CK

Today’s entry into the Short Film Friday library is inspired by a piece of Lego I stepped on this morning whilst running around trying to get out the door on time. Plus, I love Lego.

Remember the old Lego ads that had the tag-line: “A new toy everyday”? Lego is one of the few toys that has infinite possibilities. If you can imagine it, and if you have enough pieces, you can build it. That’s why I like this film.

Also, it reminds me of those old Sesame Street skits. Those weird films they sometimes had. It has the same feel, the same kind of music….

CL!CK is like a whole bunch of my childhood packed into one short film.

Short Film Friday: Bedhead

Ok, folks. Here it is. A non-animated short from the early ’90s directed by a famous, well, director.

Bedhead is a 1991 short by Robert Rodriguez. There are some elements and themes here that continue on in his work on today. Well, maybe not TODAY today, what with Machete being released today and all, but you know what I mean.

Anyways. Bedhead:

And if you aren’t aware of Machete — shame on you. Certainly it is bound to be the best full-length movie based on a fake movie trailer to date. Here’s the real trailer for the real movie based on the fake trailer (probably NSFW - language and all).

Short Film Friday: French Roast

I almost missed it! My triumphant return as keeper of Short Film Fridays….I still have a few minutes of it being officially Friday, don’t I?

In any case, here’s the Oscar-nominated short French Roast. Enjoy.

Dark film about (not) winning the lottery

One of the best things about the Internet is that it has liberated art and entertainment from the one-size-fits-all of previous models. You can see a funny YouTube video in 30 seconds, for example — it doesn’t have to be stretched out for 22 minutes as a sitcom.

And, you can tell a great little short feature in 15 minutes:

Also, since this is Friday, I guess this is Short Film Friday.

Short Film Friday: Girl on the Wall

It’s been a couple of weeks since we featured a short film on a Friday. But since I happened across this piece today, and since it happens to be Friday, well, here ya go:

Short Film Friday: World Builder

No commentary today. Just the film:

Short Film Friday: Apricot

You’ll probably see the ending coming from a mile away, but it’s still a sweet short film.
